ultrasonics joining

EWI has extensive capabilities in ultrasonic welding of metals, a solid-state bonding process. It is well suited for challenging applications involving minimal heat-affected zone, advanced materials, high heat conductivity or dissimilar materials and thickness combinations.

Ultrasonic welding is probably the most commonly used thermoplastic welding process because it is very fast (fractions to a few seconds) and usually produces welds that are relatively free of flash. In addition, ultrasonic welding is relatively easy to automate and is particularly suitable for high volume production in applications that might include lightweight automotive structures, heavy-duty electrical interconnections, medical devices, aerospace components and microelectronics packaging and interconnects.

The benefit of ultrasonic welding is that it welds materials without passing electrical current through them and without additional external fluxes or fillers. The temperature rise can be localized to the bonding interface to prevent bulk transformation of the materials whose properties may be temperature sensitive.

A special feature of EWI's ultrasonic advantage lies in the extensive equipment for measurement and diagnostics of ultrasonic systems, including laser and optical vibrometeres, impedence analyzers and power meters.
