Stan Ream Receives
EWI Technology Achievement Award

In 2007, EWI established its own Technical Excellence Award to recognize and celebrate the technical accomplishments of those EWI staff members that have made a very real difference to the organization and to our Members.

EWI associates were asked to submit nominations for the award. In all, 15 nominations were submitted, all with very compelling stories. EWI’s Executive Team was then tasked with selecting the top three nominations based on the merits of their overall contributions to EWI’s position as a recognized leader in welding and materials joining; EWI client impact -- actual (or anticipated) benefits realized by EWI's clients; and the business potential and impact resulting from the application of the technology. Finally, EWI’s Board of Directors determined the top award recipient. The choice was very difficult since all the finalists made a significant contribution to EWI’s technologies, clients, and business. After much consideration, EWI Technology Leader Stan Ream was selected as the winner of the 2007 Technical Excellence Award.

Stan’s work focused on High-Speed Laser-Welding of Fuel Cell Components for application in the automotive industry. Honorable mention prizes were awarded to Chief Engineer Mark Lozev for his work in Phased-Array Ultrasonic Testing (PA-UT) Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and to RSSW Group Applications Engineer Brian Thompson for his work in Friction Stir Welding of Thick-Section Aluminum and Steel.

EWI Hosts Popular Welding Stainless Steel Workshop

The Welding Stainless Steel Alloys Workshop held at EWI this past January 30-31 included speakers from Allegheny Ludlum, Dean Corrosion Technology, Inc., Ryerson, and The Ohio State University, as well as EWI’s own engineers. EWI hosted over 100 attendees at the one and a half day event, which addressed many contemporary manufacturing issues. Attendees also enjoyed a reception and guided tour of EWI facilities, including demonstrations of resistance cladding, magnetic pulse welding, the EWI Virtual Joining Portal, NDE of Clad Pipe, and high speed laser welding, and other cutting-edge technologies. EWI looks forward to hosting future workshops to follow the success of this event and address other important topics.
