Our mission is to provide support to The Ohio State University (OSU) welding engineering students and faculty, and to promote professional development and fellowship among OSU welding engineering graduates.

2009 AWS LUNCHEON AND ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting was held on November 18, 2009 at the AWS/FABTECH show in Chicago. We had 59 people attend, including six students, a Sr. Director from OSU Development, current and retired faculty, alums, and an AWS committee Chair interested in the future of welding engineering. Overall it was one of the best luncheons we’ve had this century.

This was the first year we asked people to donate door prizes and I was blown away with the responses. Thank you all very much.

  • Craig Little (OSU Alumni Association) donated a red OSU AA sweat shirt and two gray OSU AA tee shirts.
  • Dennis Harwig (EWI) donated a $50 and a $100 dollar gift certificate to Buckeye Corner.
  • Brad Reed (TS Tech) donated several buckeye necklaces and four amazing framed pictures from the Iowa game taken by one of the sideline photographers.
  • Shane Brook (NASA) donated a specialty welded spatula made from Inconel 718 test specimen remnants used in the repair of the Space Shuttle Main Propulsion Feed Line Flow Liners. He even prepared a folder that contained the story of the repair.
  • Lindsey Margaroli (OSU Development) donated a large container of buckeyes.

The panel discussion was awesome. Thanks to the following panelists and moderator Jeff Noruk.

Panelists:

  • Rudy Buchheit – Chair of OSU MSE Dept.
  • Jim Logan - AWS WE Student Chapter Vice President
  • Chris Conrardy – EWI Vice President & CTO
  • Bill Newell – Alum, Euroweld Vice President & Owner
  • Howard Ludewig – Alum, CAT Engineering Manager
  • John Lippold – OSU WE Professor

Thanks to all the alum volunteers that helped Nancy at the luncheon:

  • Doug Rhoda (Wolfe Robotics)
  • Brad Reed (TS Tech)
  • Jeff Noruk (Servo-Robot)
  • Matt Robinson (CAT)
  • Dennis Harwig (EWI)

Hope to see you next year in Atlanta November 2-4, 2010.

Topic: Inventing the Joint Strike Fighter

A team led by Lockheed Martin recently won the contract to develop the F35 Joint Strike Fighter, a single airplane that will be built in three different variants. The Air Force variant is a supersonic strike fighter designed to operate from conventional runways. The Navy variant will launch and recover from aircraft carriers, while the Marine Corps variant will make vertical takeoffs and landings. The key to developing this family of aircraft is a new dual cycle propulsion system, which can be switched from a turbofan cycle to a turbo shaft cycle to increase thrust for vertical takeoff and landing. This propulsion system enabled the X35 to become the first aircraft in history to fly at supersonic speeds, hover, and

land vertically. The development team won the Collier Trophy, that recognizes "the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America demonstrated during the preceding year," for this accomplishment. This presentation will describe the Joint Strike Fighter Competition and the development of this innovative engine, showing how a novel idea can grow into a new aircraft program.

Dr. Paul Bevilaqua has spent much of his career developing Vertical Take Off and Landing aircraft . He joined Lockheed Martin as Chief Aeronautical Scientist of the Lockheed Advanced Aeronautics Company, and became Chief Engineer of Advanced Development Projects in the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works. During this time, he played a leading role in creating the Joint Strike Fighter Program. He invented the Lift Fan Propulsion System that made it possible to build a stealthy, supersonic VTOL aircraft , and led the engineering team that demonstrated the feasibility of building variants of this aircraft for the Air Force, Marines, and Royal Navy. Prior to joining Lockheed Martin, he

was Manager of Advanced Programs at Rockwell International's Navy aircraft plant. He began his career as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and Deputy Director of the Energy Conversion Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He has a BS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and MS and PhD degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and he is the recipient of a USAF Scientific Achievement Award, AIAA and SAE Aircraft Design Awards, AIAA and AHS VSTOL Awards, and Lockheed Martin AeroStar and Nova Awards.

OSU STUDENT RECRUITING EFFORTS - HELP NEEDED!

The "5 Under 25 Event" was organized by current junior Sujin Kim along with the Student Alumni Council. They brought back five recent graduates of the welding engineering program to answer questions from current Ohio State students. After the panel discussion, there was a reception with professors and alumni.  The event targeted freshman and sophomore engineering students who may not have decided what area they want to go into or are not happy with their current area. There were approximately 30 students in attendance; the event was such a success that Sujin is planning another one in the fall.  Thanks for Randy Dull and Jason Hurst for participating.  The OSUWEAS provided pizza for the event.

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY - HIGH SCHOOL MATERIALS JOINING COURSE BEING TAUGHT IN OHIO  AND WELD-ED

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) High School Materials Joining Course is being used in Ohio.  The same course is being disseminated by Weld-Ed for 2 year college faculty use.

As a result of the 2009 luncheon meeting, Prof. Dave Dickinson provided a copy of the Competencies (i.e. the Syllabus) so alumni can get access to it.  Click here for compentencies. In the PLTW scheme of things, instructors take a two week “train the trainer” program before they get the actual curriculum (actually 10 CD’s), but our alumni will understand the syllabus since it is actually the old WE 300 course.

For more information, please contact Dave Dickinson at ddickins@columbus.rr.com

NSF-I/UCRC CENTER FOR INTEGRATIVE MATERIALS JOINING FOR ENERGY APPLICATIONS

It gives Prof. Suresh Babu great pleasure to inform the Alumni that OSU's proposal for the planning grant to develop an Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) entitled “Center for Integrative Materials Joining Science for Energy Applications,” has been approved by the National Science Foundation (NSF). It is important to note that this is indeed a significant recognition of NSF and their reviewers that there is a need to develop new engineering solutions for joining advanced materials.

The next step in this center development is to host a workshop with as many as possible industry participants to discuss the potential R&D needs related to welding and joining in energy applications and match the same with the technical capabilities within the Center.  This is an important step to understand industry needs and structure the center operational activities around your needs.

OSU WE is holding a comprehensive industry-university-NSF workshop at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio on December 7th and 8th. Please contact Professor Babu, if you would like to attend this meeting.

As a result of the 2009 luncheon meeting, Prof. Suresh Babu provided a copy of the presentation that explains the Center for Integrative Materials Joining for Energy Applications.  Click here for the presentation
