Nuclear Fabrication Consortium

The Nuclear Fabrication Consortium (NFC) is a consortium of organizations spanning the entire technology spectrum of nuclear fabrication -- from fundamental research to field fabrication. The objective of the consortia is to create an environment where industry can leverage the experience of others in a non-competitive arena.

It is expected that consortium members will identify and rank needs, and then pool their resources for pre-competitive research to advance fabrication technology, with a focus on near-term practical solutions. A variety of activities are envisioned, such as fabrication process and equipment development; material evaluation and testing; standards development; supply chain development; fabrication data management technology development; and sponsoring education in nuclear fabrication technologies.

Mission: The NFC is a non-competitive venue that facilitates the development and deployment of cost-effective, safe, high quality fabrication technologies for the nuclear industry.

Objectives: The NFC mission is supported through pursuit of the following objectives:

  • Identify and work to remove impediments to the implementation of new construction technologies for nuclear equipment and components
  • Provide opportunities for NFC members to become better informed advocates for the nuclear industry, specifically in the areas of infrastructure limitations, needs, and accomplishments
  • Facilitate and enhance non-competitive cooperation between NFC members through organization of NFC Core Studies.
  • Analyze and disseminate information about the past, present and future nuclear fabrication technologies and how they could impact the North American and international nuclear marketplace.
  • Facilitate dialog and initiative alignment between fabricators, owners, trade associations and government agencies.

Membership: Membership in the NFC is open to all nuclear service, fabrication and owner companies worldwide. The NFC is actively working to bridge the gap between industry, government, associations, universities and other nuclear stakeholders.

NFC Core Studies: The NFC’s primary activity is to leverage EWI’s cooperative research program, NFC member, nuclear association and government dollars to sponsor pre-competitive research aimed at safe, first time quality fabrication technology development and assessment programs. The NFC members will identify and rank needs on a yearly basis.
 
The NFC Core Studies sub-committees will focus research initiatives on near-term practical solutions. A variety of activities are envisioned, such as fabrication process and equipment development; material evaluation and testing; standards development; supply chain development; fabrication data management technology development; and training/education programs on nuclear fabrication technologies. The NFC will also sponsor briefings and conferences on topics of special interest to its members. These conferences will promote information exchange and foster communication among owners, fabrication contractors, service providers, and representatives from government agencies and academic institutions.

First Meeting: The NFC held its first meeting on July 15th & 16th, 2008, in Columbus OH. Attendees enjoyed keynote speakers and participated in break-out sessions to identify and prioritize issues and develop roadmaps.
