EWI's Welding and Materials Joining Services

services

Advanced Development Services:
EWI's full-service product and process development center is available to help develop new technologies, bring new products to market, increase production throughput, and product quality.

Design Assistance:
EWI assists Members with commercial and consumer product design engineering at no additional cost.

Equipment Specifications: Members can obtain specifications from our engineers for materials joining equipment that will meet their production requirements.

Failure Analysis: Our engineers and scientists have advanced training and industrial experience in metallurgy, failure analysis, finite element analysis and structural integrity.

Feasibility Studies: By performing comprehensive feasibility studies on new joining materials and processes, EWI is able to move the bar from scientific theory to practical industry applications.

Fitness-for-Service: Determining fitness-for-service is a specialty of EWI engineers and scientists, who make assessments based on fracture mechanics.

Fume Mitigation: EWI can assess your environmental conditions and assist customers with the task by evaluating welding operations for exposure levels to hexavalent chromium (Cr)VI)) and all Cr(VI) compounds.

General Technical Assistance: EWI is always on hand to guide our Members with general technical assistance and advice on materials and joining innovations.

Group-Sponsored Projects: Companies with a mutual materials joining interest can lower the cost and risk associated with R&D through a Group-Sponsored Project (GSP). Results remain confidential to the sponsoring companies.

In-plant (Onsite) Assessments: Our knowledgeable engineers travel to Member sites to conduct in-plant assessments to help resolve process and production issues on the factory floor.

Manufacturing Transition: We use our engineering expertise to help Members successfully make the transition from prototype to beta to full-scale manufacturing.

Materials and Methods: Hundreds of joining innovations over the years have sprung from EWI research. We apply what we learn about new materials and methods to improve our Members’ product quality and process efficiencies.

Product Design Reviews: We conduct comprehensive, objective product design reviews for Members to ensure that joining capabilities and limitations are correctly factored in.

Process and Material Selection: EWI helps Members choose the best joining materials and processes for their products so that the manufacturing can be optimized.

Process Optimization/DOE: EWI conducts designs of experiment (DOEs), establishes process windows and addresses fit-up issues in order to optimize production and save our Members money.

Prototyping: EWI builds and tests weld prototypes in the test lab and virtually using computer-aided engineering (CAE) and model simulation.

Repair Development: We develop joint repair procedures for commercial products and use computer modeling to predict residual stress and distortion in order to improve design.

Testing: EWI conducts non-destructive evaluation (NDE) along with standard, specialized, mechanical, metallurgical, penetration, and other testing. Most all testing can be done full-scale in our state-of-the-art labs.
