EWI has developed a conceptual 3D pipe mapping system that would enable GPS mapping of buried piping. The concept is underpinned by several existing technologies that are used in other industries to map the locations of everything from penguins swimming under icebergs to ocean vessels. The benefit of the technology is that it would allow for continuous GPS and elevation mapping in pipeline and piping components buried too deep for satellite positioning.
